Overview[edit | edit source]

Lyverians are one of the two native races of Deurlyth. Most hail from the southern islands of Deurlyth, roaming the lush forests in nomadic tribes. Peaceful, thoughtful and widely known for their aversion to the modernization of Deurlyth, they usually live in harmony with other cultures unless threatened or attacked. It is not uncommon for individuals to leave tribes in favor of the protection of society, though very few ever cast away their ties to their tribal homes as a result.

Government[edit | edit source]

Many tribes are governed by a a council of elders and an Archdruid, a person who is a complete master of Druidism. Every person has a place in the tribe and are expected to pull their own weight, be they a hunter, a druid, or an animal handler.

Religion[edit | edit source]

Lyverians believe that the realm was created by the Goddess, Sahria. She is often depicted as a beautiful woman with flowers throughout her long hair. It is said that Sahria created the realm in her own image and created mortals to frolic within it. It is said that when creating the Lyverian people, Sahria created them to be most in touch with the world around and them and tasked them with protecting the world she lovingly crafted.

History[edit | edit source]

The Lyverian culture in Deurlyth can be traced back for centuries, though the exact initial emergence of this vibrant culture is unknown, due to the historical legacy traditionally passed down orally throughout older tribes of Lyverians. Many other cultures have recorded interactions with the Lyverian peoples long before the Alenthylian colonization of Deurlyth, though these occurrences were few and far between as very little Lyverian people ever leave their home continent.

The historical interaction between Lyverians and their neighbors, the Deurlen are not abrasive by any means. There have been many occurrences of disputes over lands, bodies of water and food supplies, though never resulting in severe loss of life. Mainly keeping to themselves, the Lyverian tribes of Deurlyth find themselves retreating further into the forests of the landscape as the modernization of Deurlyth present only after the colonization of Deurlyth spreads rapidly throughout the landscape.

Tribal Regions[edit | edit source]

- Lowland -

The Bloombriar Hunting Outpost along the northern roads of Deurlyth trade meats and furs. Owned by a Lyverian family, it demonstrates communion with nature while adapting to new environments.

Remnants of the tribes that previously called mainland Deurlyth home, the lowland tribes are a fleeting memory of what once was. Unwilling to travel outwards or brave the northern ranges year round, many of them still cling to the Elder Oak groves about the mainland, doing what they can to ensure their protection and living in harmony with nature within them.

Small in numbers, and forced to interact with the flood of foreign immigrants the lowland Lyverians are among the most integrated with mainland society, being far more familiar with their culture and customs. While the lowland Lyverians still hold to much of their old values, preferring open areas and choosing to treat the land with respect and dignity, they have adopted some of the habits of the local populations and are more inclined to further dress themselves, engage in day-to-day life, and are generally more tolerant of change and the bleed of cultures into their own. With food and resources being more readily available, they are also known to have more varied diets, and tend to be a little heavier than the other lyverian tribes.

- Gold Coast -

Home to a large quantity of Lyverians, the southern forests of the Golden Coast have become home to an impressive number of tribes. Abundant in resources, the massive trees jutting out above the treeline have become home to many Lyverians over time and the forests are generally recognized as belonging to them. The Gold Coast Lyverians are among the most varied, as the tribes are very much independent and individual interactions with other cultures. Generally, they are reasonably accepting of those willing to respect their lands and culture, however clashes over resources and land have caused some tensions between the Lyverians and the local Deurlen clans, as well as Novania.

Along with abundant resources, the hospitable island has allowed the native tribes to take up much more permanent residence, establishing larger villages and putting far more effort into encouraging the growth of the trees in a manner more fitting of prolonged residence. While much of the culture of the tribes remains consistent to that of the average Lyverian, the larger villages have allowed for more developed tribes to come to fruition and their claims being far more represented. Their involvement with the mainland of Deurlyth has allowed many of them to familiarize themselves with common writing and Novanian society.

- Far Eastern -

When the flood of immigrants had reached Deurlyth, not all of the Lyverian people were so enthusiastic. A few of the tribes, led by their elders and archdruids feared for the safety of their way of life and doubted the security and intentions of the Novanians. Long had they fought to preserve their claim on the land and now, feeling it inevitable they reluctantly opted to leave the mainland in hopes of at least preserving their culture and reestablishing themselves beyond the reach of Novania. Travelling eastward in small boats, they would find themselves on a reasonably sized wooded island enough so secluded that they would be left alone for quite some, beginning the process of encouraging the forests into ones more inhabitable, constructing their homes there.

Over time, the tribes that had fled the mainland east would slowly unify into one all encompassing tribe that controlled the island. At the heart of their beliefs was a simple goal: To preserve the old ways and live in harmony with Sahria’s creation. In recent years contact still remains limited, as the tribe has no desire to make contact with the outside world or invite them in, their general disposition to those not of Deurlyth negative. While peaceful, they will take up arms to defend their home if it is threatened, making use of powerful nature magics as necessary.

- Southern Marshes -

Deep within the depths of the southern marshes you may find the homes of Lyverians nestled into the moss and reeds of the swamp. The tribes of the Southern Marsh are a unique set, albeit somewhat bizarre that have perfected the art of living in the swamps, all but one with nature. Here, many of the traditional Lyverian values are still carried on however more often than not they have taken new forms, warped by the vastly different lifestyle and needs of the people. In time, they have become a thriving yet small community, who has come to welcome and support those that find themselves in need while within the swamps with a laid back and generous attitude. On many occasions the tribes have helped out travelling Deurlen as well, and though few Deurlen remain in the region long word has spread of their good intentions providing them with support from beyond the swamps on occasion.

Simple people, the marshland Lyverians are a notably laid back, carefree society that has adapted to the dangers of the swamp impressively. Though typically more lanky with paler skin, they are impressively resilient against the widespread illnesses that plague the marshes and able to traverse the bogs and thickets with ease. Travelling with the seasonal tides, they live in simple homes woven into the roots of the swamp flora that are often hidden depending on the season. More permanent residences are typically built up, nestled in the canopy of the trees or on stilts between them, covered in thick mosses and vines to insulate them and hide them among the foliage. Their diet consists primarily of fish as well as swamp grasses, mushrooms and the occasional berries or fruit. Much of the food is eaten in the form it is gathered in, otherwise the leftovers are cooked into stews with mushrooms or preserved for later.

The clothing of the marshland lyverians has also taken a unique form where they heavily adorn their hides with grasses, woods and mosses to blend themselves into the environment, allowing for better ease of hunting and stronger ties to the nature around them. Masks are also commonplace within the village, used when conducting rituals and commonly worn by druids when practicing magic.

- Island -

Far south of Deurlyth set in the small rocky formations and islands, there are a few remote tribes who have long since secluded themselves from the rest of the world. A unique, lively set of tribes they have taken to living on the islands due to their seclusion and accessibility to food. Good fortune has made the tribes notably friendly and approachable to outsiders however rare, though they are not particularly fond of extended visits and are confused by other cultures.

The Island tribes have a diet quite different from those of the others, consisting mainly of fish, fruits and berries. Few wild game has made it so far south, so while hunters are rare, fisherman are far more common. Their dress is also minimal, consisting mainly of grasses and scarce woven fabrics, as well as wood and bone masks and adornments. The tattoos of the island tribes are typically very colorful and detailed, rarely even being of multiple colors.

Most importantly of all the variations between the other tribes, the island tribes are most known to give back to the earth whenever possible though they choose to do so by unconventional means. Often times after a good harvest or a successful day fishing, before eating they will set aside a portion which will either be buried, fed to the birds, or returned to the sea.

- Northern -

Of the brave Lyverians that trekked north into Deurlen territory, few would survive the harsh climate and inhospitable lands of the north. It was only through unbreaking determination and a willingness to work with the local Deurlen populations that the northern tribes were able to secure their place in the north, taking to the pines and cold seas and calling them home. The northern tribes are a hardy bunch, who have over the years perfected survival in the harsh climate with some local help. Over the years they have fostered a positive relationship with the Deurlen clans, taking from them many of the strategies they use to survive the cold environment. Most notably, the northern Lyverian tribes are known to be migratory, travelling where the food goes with the season.

During the summer months many of them follow game, tracking the herds on the larger islands and foraging from the forests while they can. When the winter months come and the sea freezes over, they take up a more secure residence and dig in for the winter, relying heavily on stored goods to bring in food. Hunters will also travel to some of the more remote islands in the summer months. Every kill is a blessing from Sahria herself, and they are sure to honor the animal and make use of as much of it as possible to minimize waste. They’ve adapted to handle the cooler climate, and are well prepared to plan for whatever lies ahead. Notably, due to the cold they are also the most heavily dressed of the Lyverian tribes, wearing thick furs and hides that fully cover them head to toe.

Quirks[edit | edit source]

Overview[edit | edit source]

The Lyverian people are a simple, peaceful folk that live within tribes dotting the wilds, relying on their relationship with nature in order to survive the harsh Deurlyth landscape. Widely believing in the protection of nature and the balance between human life and the natural world due to the nature of their religion, many Lyverians are known for their aversion to modern society. As the Lyverian home life permits relative peace from much of the modernized world, much of the Lyverian people exist deeply within their ancient culture. Though mainly peaceful, there are tribes that willfully attack those that endanger the natural landscape.

Appearance[edit | edit source]

Lyverians are a typically tall and muscular race of people, known for their sharp, dark features and beautifully woven hair. Traditionally, Lyverians tend to dye their hair with plant life native to their tribal home forests, resulting in an array of vibrant colors. Tattoos are widely prevalent as well, with many traditional ceremonies ending in many different tattoo rituals for every occasion. A Lyverian can earn their tattoos in any way the tribe elders see fit, be it graduating into a Druid or acting heroically during an attack on the tribe.

Practices[edit | edit source]

Language[edit | edit source]

The Lyverian language is a complex language created over the centuries, consisting of hundreds of dialects and variations each unique to their region and tribe. While all of the lyverian tribal languages are generally classified as “Lyverian” there is more often than not minimal compatibility between the different dialects and as a result, outside of one’s own tribe their native language serves minimal purpose. Only in regions where tribes have been successfully united into one larger tribe have more prominent languages come to exist, being an intricate combination of the previous languages of the formerly separate tribes, or more often than not simply one language that becomes the preference. As a result, this lapse of intercommunication between the different regions, and between the Lyverians and other races has resulted in a strong need for a better method and it is for this reason that common was so readily adopted and spread among the tribes.

When common first came to Deurlyth, it was first adopted by the Deurlen and then later spread to the Lyverians by necessity, used as a facilitative language between the two cultures. Originally, the two had tried and struggled to learn each other's dialects but now with a common middle ground, learning common was far more effective and eventually became used across the vast majority of both races. For the Lyverians, common served as a means of facilitating trade, negotiations, and other forms of communication between the clans and the new coming cultures but it never was fully accepted as the primary language of the Lyverians. While nearly all Lyverians are taught to speak common, their native dialects are still recognized as the primary language and it is in those that they are first taught to read and write and for this reason, why many Lyverians cannot read or write common and such a trend continues to exist. Many of the more isolated tribes are also rarely exposed to individuals who speak common and as a result have limited reason to learn and maintain the knowledge whatsoever.

As time marches on, the use of the broadly varying ancient language of the Lyverian people, Sarliien, has slowly started to fade out and is no longer used outside of tribal life. Most Lyverian people speak common, but use certain phrases and words in every day life.

Val'Daen - Greetings, well met, glad to make your acquaintance.

Lyuben Aldaesh - Goodbye, may your travels bring you to green pastures.

Valenda'lieen - From death, comes life. [Often spoken after a hunt]

Ryuven'Aludan - All things have a right to be here, all creatures have a right to thrive, this earth belongs to everyone.

Clothing[edit | edit source]

Lyverians often dress in light clothing made of warm cloth and thick leathers, due to the naturally cold climate of Deurlyth. As a large majority of Lyverians either live or come from tribes situated within the lush forests of Deurlyth, it is quite common to see Lyverian people with many articles of clothing well constructed with various flora seen within the Deurlyth wilds.

Food[edit | edit source]

The Lyverian people live on a simple diet of hardy vegetables, roots, edible plants and wild game. As many Lyverian tribes believe in avoiding waste when killing an animal of the wild, Lyverian people tend to use all parts of hunted animals for various means, such as clothing, cleaning, hunting and mainly food. As much of the diet of the Lyverian people consists of natural cooking methods and preparation, focusing on nutrition and survival in the wilds, the Lyverian people are quite healthy.

Marriage[edit | edit source]

In order for two Lyverians to be wed, first the Archdruid must allow it to be so. The one wishing to propose, be it man or woman, must make an offer to their partner, which typically include rare and beautiful flowers and the pelt of a rare animal, the animal is then cooked and prepared as a meal for the two new partners, celebrating the life of the animal that played such and integral role in the ceremony.

Slavery[edit | edit source]

The idea of slavery itself is quite foreign to the Lyverian people, as the mainstays of Lyverian culture revolve around the respect of all life and the forced servitude of another would be an affront to that ideal entirely. Though it can be noted that the Lyverian people have encountered such acts, even within their own tribes, many Lyverians would recall these tales as barbaric personal acts.

Historically, in 3E 1162 some Lyverian people were taken as slaves by Alenthylian noblemen and traders for use in The Valley of Mines, an event that occurred in the northern ranges of Deurlyth.

Folklore[edit | edit source]

Lyverians themselves believe heavily in the protection of nature, as it is the embodiment of their goddess, Sahria. Many Lyverians can recall stories from their childhood, passed through elder hands, these stories come naturally to many Lyverians and most have many different variants for each individual tribe.

Animals

Stories tell similar tales of animals, large and small, being the messengers of Sahria herself. In these tales, people have been saved from unpredictably harsh storms or showed the way home when lost in the large forests in the Deurlyth wilds. It is said that Sahria is compassionate and tries to help her creations in many ways, and this is one of many.

Education[edit | edit source]

The ways of formal education within colonized society is a very silly idea to many Lyverians, who learn through the teachings of their elders and the Archdruid. Much of the education of the Lyverian people revolves around agriculture, animal husbandry and the ways of living within the harsh forests of Deurlyth as well as protecting the balance of their mark on the natural life in the wild.

Magic[edit | edit source]

Lyverians have no particular relationship with any other branch of magic other than Druidism. Druidism is a branch of nature magic that specializes in healing and repairing. Druidism is believed in the Lyverian religion to be a gift from their Goddess, Sahria. Many Lyverian practices revolve around the use of Druidism and nature magic in general. The Gift is quite celebrated in Lyverian culture, as the moment a child shows signs of having magical ability, it can be said that they may be the next Archdruid, which some tribes go years without as some generations are born completely without it.

Funerals[edit | edit source]

The Lyverian people are very close with nature and have quite a rational understanding of death. Lyverians believe that once the life has gone from a member of the tribe, their duty as a person is to reintegrate into the earth and nature itself. The Lyverian burial ceremony takes place very few days after death, generally including a ritual washing of the deceased in order to cleanse all unnatural life essence from the body in order to protect the earth.

Painting the deceased with vibrant dyes and paints that celebrate the vibrancy of their life as a whole. When many of the tribe specific ceremonies are completed, the tribe is tasked with locating a tree to carefully carve hollow, as not to kill the tree, to place the deceased within. This is seen as a very natural burial, and is celebrated a year after if the tree survives the transplantation.
