Slavery in Aevonhold[edit | edit source]

With the institution of slavery banned in most forms throughout the nations of Aevonhold, only Ulyssa, Peramul, and Rune'Daath-- referred to as the Maw collectively-- see notable slave traffic. The dwindling status of Ulyssa, the selectivity of slaves in Peramul, and the ban of slavery in Rune’Daath (at least officially under the Grand Sultana) makes the smaller, but still lucrative, slave trade in Aevonhold all the more multi-faceted and competitive. Some companies have sought to distinguish themselves while others have diversified.

Major Slave Organizations[edit | edit source]

Ante-Copiae[edit | edit source]

The Ante-Copiae form the largest share of business in Ulyssa, trading often among the Siecian ports. Their members consist exclusively of former members of Ulyssa’s federal and regional militaries. Highly disciplined and organized, they obtain slaves through incursions into neighboring territories and the invasion of overseas coasts. In part due to fiercer resistance, the Ante-Copiae also do mercenary work.

The slaves are disciplined harshly, and many of the slaves are sent either to work or to be trained in Ulyssa's slave armies.

Qadin Falding[edit | edit source]

The Qadin Falding are a confederation of pirates, consisting mainly of Rune’Daathians and Peratecans, who primarily reside on the archipelagos and islands between the shores of Peramul and Rune’Daath.

The band is led under the charismatic leadership of Amaro de Arena, a Peratecan captain (in)famous for strategy. The group consists of thousands of members across hundreds of ships either travelling together or hidden among the island coves or sea expanse. While each captain the leader of their ship, many heed Amaro’s word due to a respect for his reputation.

The group has had a great deal of success, causing fear and discord in the seas of southern Auros. Though facing harassment by the Ulyssian navy, these forces have been repelled each of the four campaigns, the final being devastating and embarrassing for Ulyssa. For the free men and women of the Qadin Falding, they can retire to comfort within some years of joining. Many choose not to leave to remain a part of this brotherhood, and there is a strong loyalty-- at least to Amaro de Arena.

However, Amaro is considerably aged and weathered. Although his word is still highly respected and his age unknown, whispers come and go of power plays by other notable figures and right hand men, captains of ships under his command. Some captains, even have dispersed from the main group as though not wanting to be caught in the crossfire.

Lorellus Labour Enterprises[edit | edit source]

Lorellus Labour Enterprises (LLE) is a commissions-based slave organization. Low-membered and subtle, the organization acts on behalf of its clients to obtain and transfer individuals based upon the description clients give them, ranging from appearance to skills. If necessary, LLE will spend the time and effort necessary to retrain their slaves to fit a particular skillset. Their “commissions” for obtaining these slaves are expensive, so usually only the highest in society pay for their services. The organization is rumored to have contacts in every corner of Aevonhold.

Legally, the group provides servants where such a social arrangement is legal, such as Alenthyl. The services in this area of business are less expensive but bring in a higher volume of clients. It is unknown what proportion of transactions are in either industry, but servant commissions are growing in number.

Western Suns[edit | edit source]

The Western Suns specialize in obtaining slaves from the Western Kingdoms. Consisting mostly of Ulyssians and Rune’Daathians, the slave business is one subset of their illegal trade, which includes drugs and weapon smuggling. Notably, they are infamous for getting around naval blockades.

The manner in which they obtain slaves is strategic and cautious, often taking due measures to cover tracks, planting false evidence, and coinciding events to naturalize the disappearances. They regularly hire mercenaries to quash rivals and even lobby naval militaries in these countries to hunt competitors. Due to the large proportion of Western slaves these groups acquire and their high demand among Ulyssian manors and retreats, the gold earned covers these precautions adequately. The Western Suns are even known to change the name of their organization to shift and break ties, as when slave dealings in Novania went poorly.

The Western Suns are indiscriminate with whom they abduct, and will classify their slaves by color to designate what kind of role they will serve. "Red" means that the slave will go on to serve a fighting or combative role, such as arena-fighting or bodyguard services. "Green" indicates a "pleasure" role, at worst being sexual in nature. "Yellow" is reserved for soft labor, such as the role of a servant or sweat-shop worker, and "blue" for hard labor, such as brick-laying, cargo-loading, and rowing. Over the course of a year or two, the slaves are extensively trained to remove all hope and resistance (often, to the point of forgetting their past lives) and to better fulfill their new role based on their color.

Phai Ti[edit | edit source]

The Phai Ti is the most prevalent slave group along the east coast of Auros. Notably, the group has a large Sinvali presence among its ranks. Members of the Phai Ti are almost always at sea, rarely setting foot on land, and have adapted to suit this lifestyle. Even sales of slaves are done on one of their boats, known for their speed and ability to evade pursuing ships. Often, their targets include lone Nobugohito or Sinvali fishermen or traders, but their reach extends toward some on the coasts of Elterlein and Rune’Daath.
